The needs of our Gifted and Talented students are largely met by class teachers in the delivery of differentiated programmes, in which tasks are designed to suit a range of abilities and learning styles. In addition, Hornby High School has a staff committee which communicates with parents, whanau and the school community to develop a shared understanding about gifted and talented education. The committee works with the community to identify able, gifted and talented students in all curriculum areas. Students may be nominated by staff, family, peers or self nomination with relevant evidence provided to demonstrate skills and potential. We develop inclusive and appropriate definitions that reflect student diversity, keep up-to-date with current research and share research information with staff and whanau. We aim to develop an awareness within the school community of particular social and emotional characteristics of gifted and talented students. Students are provided with extension and enrichment opportunities through events and activities competitions, university visits and programmes to develop thinking skills. If you would like further information please contact Mrs Joanne Clark at the school. For more information see 'gifted and talented' at Te Kete Ipurangi.
Hornby High School holds a bi-annual awards ceremony for our highly achieving and promising Māori students. Click here to read more.
