Boys' Education

Boys’ achievement is a complex area. Nethertheless, the central issue for boys’ education is the ongoing achievement gap between boys and girls. In New Zealand, NCEA results show that there is approximately a 10 percent gap in favour of girls across Levels 1, 2 and 3.

From a study done by the Education Review Office in 2008, it is recognised that the following areas in schools need to be strong for boys to demonstrate success:

1) Leadership opportunities

2) A sense of school culture

3) Relevant teaching and learning

4) Positive relationships

5) Literacy and Numeracy support

At Hornby High School we have a professional development group that collates current research and presents it to the wider staff, along with practical methods of incorporating the findings into lessons. This school wide approach improves boys' engagement levels and is improving their scores in both Literacy and Numeracy.
