Whanau, family, friends are welcomed to many Arts events during the school year.

NCEA Drama students performed with masks and swords of their own creation. They are learning sword fighting techniques from a visiting tutor and have created Edwardian costumes. In Term 2 there was a comedy selection created by Level Two and Three students: “Ratcatchers”, a western melodrama and a selection of comic songs, characters and dances. This was performed to an audience during the Hornby High School Arts Evening.
Staff and students had a chance to compete for glory in this "Stars in Their Eyes" performance extravaganza. The stars of "High School Musical" were brought to life by staff and students, and there was a wide variety of songs and instrumental music. This was a very enjoyable evening and a highlight of the school calendar.

Hornby High is actively involved in a numerous dance performance opportunities. The Stage Challenge competition is an 8 minute dance sequence, which was performed at Christchurch Town Hall with highlights shown on TV later in the year. The New Zealand Polyfest was a large celebration of Polynesian culture attended by Hornby High School's dance group, who performed a polished Pasifika dance routine in the Christchurch Town Hall. An eight week course in Urban Dance was run by professional tutors at Hornby High School. This was funded by the Ministry of Health as a way to involve teenagers in physical activity. Classes introduced students to a range of dance styles such as hip hop, krumping and tutting. Students had homework into various dance styles and were encouraged to take leadership by teaching the routines to others. Fifteen students started the course with brave dancers performed at Linwood College’s junior assembly in the last week of term. All students greatly enjoyed the professional training and the friendly, positive attitudes that Ally and Steve provided.
Theatre Trips:The student Court Theatre Ambassadors this year are Nicole Goodman, Michelle Grafton and Danni-Elle Thomas who attended their first meeting on 19th and watched a performance of "The Tutor". Our students have had two opportunities to attend performances in Term 1, when groups went to "Privates on Parade" and the opera "Gianni Schicchi". In Term 2 an enthusiastic group attended “I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change”, and a trip to “The Great Gatsby” is planned for early in Term 3. On August the 1st we are booked to see an exciting piece created by Belgium teenagers, which is part of the Christchurch Arts Festival.
Arts Evening:At the end of term 2 there was a combined presentation with the Art Department's work on display, including photography and a skateboard design competition. The Music Department provided musical items from Level 1 & 2 classes, voice solos and flute solos. The Drama Department contributed a melodrama and scenes from the play "Las Vegas".
